A double bass is almost two meters tall and weighs about eleven kilograms. If it had a lid, its body could comfortably fit a whole man! Its transportation is not easy at all, therefore double bass players prefer to avoid such adventures. Often likened to the elephant, the double bass has a deep voice and the admirable ability to make little feet dance in its rhythms. The next Double Bass Pillow Concert will host not one, not two, but three real double basses. The musical programme is again fully Czech and will be masterly performed by Dr. Svoboda Bozduganova – one of the most prominent Bulgarian double bass players. Body, as her friends prefer to call her, has specialized in the Czech Republic which is known around the world with its double bass traditions. Body’s stage partners will be two of her students at Sofia’s Musical School – Dea Maistorska and Kalina Andreeva, accompanied on the piano by Veneta Neynska.

Svoboda Bozduganova has graduated the National Music Academy “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” with a double bass major in classical, pop and jazz music. She has specialized and earned a second Master’s degree at the Leos Janacek Academy in the Czech Republic. She is a laureate from international competitions in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. During the past two years, she teaches double bass at the National School of Music “L. Pipkov” and in March, 2013 she was awarded the title “Doctor” from the NMA “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov”. Body is known on the Bulgarian concert stage with her participation in various jazz formations. She does not limit herself in a specific style of music and has already proved numerous times that her path in music lies in both the classical as well as in the jazz sphere. She is also an accomplished soloist with several double bass recitals and a great number of other concert participations.
Both Kalina Andreeva and Dea Maistorska are currently students at the National School of Music “Liubomir Pipkov” and both are majoring in double bass with Dr. Svoboda Bozduganova. Kalina was awarded the Third Prize at the first age group of the IV Double Bass Competition “Carl D. von Dittersdorf” in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. Apart from playing the double bass, the young musician is a Bulgarian folklore singer. Dea started playing the double bass when she was thirteen after showing an acute interest in music from a very young age. Like Kalina, Dea is also a singer – she started her musical education as a member of the “Bon-bon” children’s vocal group.
